Cancer Cure Fund

The diagnosis of Cancer is often associated with gloom and despair. Many patients feel they have lost their battle the moment they are given the cost estimate. Its not mental strength or will to fight that is lacking. Its the fact that their limited resources are no match for the expensive treatment that defeats them - leading to anguish, pain and loss of hope.

Most turn to prayer for help.... Approaching God in the only way they know.

And help arrives for them. These are the stories of how Indian Cancer Society's Cancer Cure Fund has the privilege of being the agent of God, of rekindling hope in these cancer patients, in empowering them to receive the best possible curative treatment, in transforming their lives!

Mast. Sumit Rai, a 13 year old boy from Buxar, Bihar, was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, a type of cancer. No one can say looking at his smiling face that this boy does not have parents. His maternal uncle looks after Sumit and his siblings. His Uncle is farmer who earns Rs.2300/-per month. In 2011 they went to Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, where they were given a cost estimate was Rs. 2.5 lacs, it was impossible for the family to raise this kind of money and they were extremely disheartened. That is when the Indian Cancer Society’s Cancer Cure Fund stepped in. With the promise of complete financial adoption by the social worker, the worries of family vanished. Sumit has completed the treatment in April 2012 and is now on follow up. He has rejoined school and has appeared for his 6thstandard examination. Al through the initial investigation and till the time there was a promise of therapy, Sumit was always fearful. Now he seems happy and cheerful. His uncle is very thankful to ICS and hopes that other children also benefit in the same way as Sumit.
Arkarpavo Mukherjee, a 5 year old child from Kolkata, West Bengal, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of blood cancer. His father works as Sales representative and earns Rs. 10000/- per month. This family unfortunately has a second child suffering from cerebral palsy. They went to Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata where the cost estimate was given for Rs. 4 lacs. Parents were about to loose all hope, as it was not possible for them to raise that amount. That is when the hospital referred their case to Indian Cancer Society, with the promise of complete financial adoption for the treatment of Arkapravo their treatment started. Now, he has completed treatment and is doing well. Arkapravo is admitted in nursery school. Father is thankful to ICS CCF for the timely and valuable help for his son’s treatment.
Ms. Reji Chandran, nineteen year old girl from Kanoor, Kerala was diagnosed with Defuse Large B Cell Lymphoma, at Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. Her father works as carpenter & earns Rs. 50/-on daily wages. The treatment cost was Rs. 1.5 lacs, Reji’s parents were completely disheartenedand helpless and thought it would be impossible to go on with their daughter’s treatment. It was only after the sanction of Rs. 1.5 lacs from ICS Cancer Cure Fund, that her treatment commenced at Regional Cancer Centre. Reji has now completed the treatment & is on a six months follow up. She has joined a basic computer course for three months and is also thinking of continuing her further education in Industrial Relations Diploma. She says, “A big thank you to all the donor’s of Indian Cancer Society’s Cancer Cure Fund for the helping hand.”
Mr. Vipul Prajapati, a twenty five year old gentleman from Krishnanagar, Gujarat was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute, Ahmedabad. His father had passed away because of same disease as the family was not able to afford the treatment. Vipul was the sole breadwinner of his family and by works as a labour and earns Rs. 1000/-per month. Vipul had given up all hopes like his father and was coming to terms with his illness when Indian Cancer Society’s Cancer Cure Fund stepped in with a commitment to bear the total treatment cost of Rs. 4 lacs in July, 2012. Now Vipul is on a 1 month maintenance treatment and is doing well. His mother says “I had lost my husband and now don’t want to loose my only son.” She is very thankful to Indian Cancer Society.
Ms. Bhanupriya Nathru, a 20 year old lady from Ganjam, Orissa, was diagnosed with Rhabdomysarcoma at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, She had lost her father in a railway accident at Bandra, during her treatment. Her brother is twenty-three years old and supports the family by giving tuitions. He earns Rs. 12000/- annually. When the hospital gave them a cost certificate of Rs. 2.5 lacs, her brother was lost the hope of saving his sister’s life. They went and met the social workers at the hospital and were given the opportunity to apply to ICF for funding. Bhanupriya has completed her treatment in June 2012 and is on 6 months follow up. She has joined her college at Orissa, and is studying M.Com. When ICS contacted her brother he had tears in his eyes and conveyed a sincere “thank you” to Indian Cancer Society.

Two young brothers in Kerala suffer from an undiagnosed disease, making them immobile

A group of Indian expatriates from the Payyoli Panchayat in Kozhikkodu, Kerala, are engaged in a marathon charity drive to help an Indian family with two of its young members suffering from an unidentified disease that has left them in a state of paralysis.

Medical experts and doctors haven’t been able to diagnose the ailment, and the expatriate community in the UAE is trying its best to help the ordinary family of an auto-rikshaw driver, who has been struggling to meet the medical expenses of two of his three young sons suffering from the unidentified disease.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Faisal Melady, President of Peruma (Payyoli Expatraite Residents United Malayali Association) said community members have taken the responsibility to  help the distressed poor family living in their village.
“We all are sad about the plight of the Ashokan family who has been living with the meager income the father earns working as an auto driver. His first son, Arun, 23, started showing symptoms of the unknown disease after attaining the age of 9, and he needed help to move. He cannot move his limbs or even the head and always need support to go to the toilet or to eat food. This is a deadly unknown disease that affects one in 10 million people,” he said.

“His second son, Athul PP, 18, had been a brilliant student, scoring more than 80 per cent marks in his Secondary School and Plus One Examinations. The second son was also taking care of his sick elder brother, but he too started showing symptoms of the strange disease and is now suffering from an advanced form of the same disease,” Faisal said, adding that the family is now worried about their third son, who is also reaching the same age when his two brothers started showing symptoms of the disease.

Within two years of the mystery disease manifesting itself, the elder boy could not stand on his own, speak or keep his shoulders or head straight. Doctors suspect it to be a case of White Matter Disease for which there is no treatment. Copies of a document detailing the family’s problems, and appeals from the village Panchayats are also going around helping the Ashokan family. Many Keralites in the UAE hail from Calicut, and the special campaign is by people from the three villages, viz. Payyoli, Vadakara and Thorayoor in Calicut.

“Ashokan KM, the head of the family, used to make a living by driving an auto-rikshaw. But due to the severe illness of his two young sons, his presence is always needed to take care of them along with his wife, Rama.
The couple has been trying for the last eight years and the boys have been treated in various hospitals, the Calicut Medical College, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, the Vellore Neurology Christian Medical College and the Shree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology Thiruvananthapuram. A video presentation of the sick youngsters is going around on YouTube and through the digital media, showing the pathetic situation,” said Faisal.

Sometimes the brothers cry very loudly and community members of Payyoli Village have formed several rehabilitation and support committees for the two sick brothers. Now, their expatriate brethren in the UAE are keen to support the family by ensuring a regular source of income to continue their treatment and help the boys’ parents. A special Arun-Athul Treatment Support Committee has the endorsement of the Payyoli Village Panchayat Presnident, KT Sindhu, and various medical reports about the youth’s medical condition.
